Newborn dies in ambulance, kin allege shortage of oxygen
Bharatpur, Dec. 14 -- A newborn child died in an ambulance in Rajasthan's Jaipur, police said on Saturday, adding that family members have alleged that the one-day-old boy died as the oxygen cylinder in the ambulance ran out.
The incident occurred on Friday evening near Bassi here, when the infant, who had been struggling to breathe, was referred from Bharatpur district's Bayana hospital to SMS hospital, and his father and uncle were taking him in a private ambulance, Bassi police station SHO Dharmendra Kumar said.
"Near Banskho, the father noticed that the cylinder had run out of oxygen, following which the ambulance driver went to nearby Bassi hospital, where doctors declared the child dead. There was no nursing staff in the ambulance and the oxygen cylinder was being operated by the father," the SHO said.
According to the father, the ambulance driver abandoned them at the Bassi government hospital after the child's oxygen supply was depleted, the SHO said.
Mukesh Kumar, the father, said, "We were taking our child by ambulance to Jaipur but the oxygen cylinder was without gas and our newborn child died before reaching Jaipur."
The family members took the deceased child's body back to Bharatpur hospital by ambulance, SHO Dharmendra Kumar said, adding that no complaint was filed....
