Alwar, April 19 -- Hundreds of labourers at a Japanese electric equipment supplier in Alwar district's Neemrana staged a protest on Saturday, demanding unpaid wages, a pay rise, fixed hours and better food, echoing recent unrest in nearby industrial hubs. Neemrana subdivisional magistrate Mahendra Yadav said: "The protest erupted at a Japanese electric equipment supplier company on Saturday morning. Administration along with police officials reached the spot and are putting effort to bring an agreement between the company management and the labourers." According to officials, the labourers demanded a suitable pay rise and fixed working hours. On Saturday morning, hundreds of labourers gathered at the factory's main gate and began sloganeering against the management. One protester, Vishnu Kumar, told reporters: "The company did not clear our payments for over four months now. None of our salary is also suitable to what we serve during the flexible working hours. The company have to clear our pending payments and give a hike. The food quality is also very poor that's served to the labourers. The management must look into it." Another labourer, Arun, alleged that the company deducts amounts from their salaries if they take leave. "They also threaten us to suspend us. The labourers have been upset for a long time. We won't start our work until the management agrees to our demands," he said. Subdivisional magistrate Yadav said the protest remained peaceful, though additional police force was deployed to maintain law and order. "We are speaking to the authority and are trying to resolve the issues of the labourers." On April 8, the Haryana government announced a 35% minimum wage rise for labourers, effective April 1, boosting monthly pay for unskilled workers to Rs.15,220, semi-skilled workers to Rs.16,780, and skilled workers to Rs.18,500.
