Need to reshape mining as a constructive activity: Minister
Jaipur, July 8 -- Union coal and mines minister G Kishan Reddy on Monday lauded Rajasthan's unique mineral wealth, including the iconic Makrana marble, and emphasised the need to change the perception of mining from destructive to creative.
He said the star-rating system has brought a major transformation in the sector, with 98 mines have been rated this year - some receiving a 7-star for the first time.
The Union minister was speaking at a felicitation ceremony in Jaipur, organised by the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) for mines that have been rated seven-star and five-star.
Stressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Zero Defect, Zero Effect" vision, Reddy urged the adoption of global standards in environment, safety, and innovation.
Reddy emphasised the need to reshape the image of mining as a constructive activity, saying, "Mining is often perceived as destructive, but in reality, it is creative. Without coal, there is no electricity, and without mining, development is not possible." He urged mining companies to create videos showcasing their good work and promote them widely.
Reddy said the government's policies have not only boosted the mining sector but have also safeguarded the interests of local communities and mine workers. He underlined the importance of adopting technology for sustainable mining practices.
Rajasthan sets record in major mineral lease auctions
Speaking on the occasion, chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma said that Rajasthan has emerged as a "museum of minerals," having achieved a significant milestone in the auction of major mineral leases. Currently, 57 types of metallic and non-metallic minerals are being extracted in the state, contributing 12% to the total value of India's mineral production.
Highlighting the state's achievements, he said, "Rajasthan has crossed the century mark in major mineral lease auctions. Out of 500 blocks allotted across the country, Rajasthan alone has successfully allocated over 100, accounting for more than 20%." Additionally, the state has auctioned 960 minor mineral blocks and 137 quarry plots.
He also pointed out a sharp rise in mining royalty revenue under his government. "During 2023-24, under the previous government, the state earned Rs.7,460 crore in mining royalties, with just a 3% increase. However, our efforts led to Rs.9,228 crore in 2024-25 - a 24% jump, which is a record," he said.
He added that the state government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against illegal mining, launching three special drives to curb unlawful activities in the sector.
Rajasthan is progressing rapidly in the mining sector through transparent processes, ease of doing business, and expansion of infrastructure. "Our goal is to establish Rajasthan as a leading hub in the mining industry," he said....
