Barmer/Jaisalmer, Sept. 6 -- In Jaisalmer's Dangri village, the standoff over the Khetsingh murder case took a decisive turn as authorities moved in with bulldozers. Acting on demands raised during talks with a delegation, the administration demolished five shops belonging to the murder accused and cleared fencing from nearly 150 bighas of encroached government land. Officials assured that further illegal encroachments linked to the case would also be identified and removed. The bulldozer action, which followed a late-night settlement with villagers, ended the sit-in protest but immediately triggered sharp political reactions. Barmer MP and senior Congress leader Ummedaram Beniwal blamed the district administration for failing to control tensions. He called the incident unfortunate and questioned the law and order in the state. "Two months ago, Basanpeer had witnessed similar tensions. The responsibility lies with the Jaisalmer district administration, which failed to control the situation. Those who incited mobs must face strict action," he said. As part of the settlement, villagers agreed to withdraw their protest after receiving assurances of financial compensation, a contractual government job for a family member, and the release of 26 detained demonstrators. Despite the escalating tensions, district administration officials, including Jaisalmer collector Pratap Singh and SP Abhishek Shivhare, avoided responding to repeated queries. Multiple phone calls to the collector went unanswered. However, Fatehgarh SDM Bharat Gurjar confirmed to HT that the demolitions were carried out by Panchayat authorities based on the settlement. Asked whether prior notice had been issued before the drive, Gurjar said he would "need to check the record."...
