Jaipur, June 10 -- Rajasthan reported the maximum stillbirth cases in India at the end of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2022, revealed a latest report of the Central Registration System (CRS) published last week. According to the data, Rajasthan had a total 24,560 stillbirth cases in 2022 followed by 11,794 in Gujarat, 10,493 in Madhya Pradesh, 9,915 in Maharashtra, and 8,293 in Assam. The total number of stillbirths in the urban areas are also more than the rural areas. At least 5,030 children were still-born in Rajasthan's rural areas in 2022. The figure is about 19,530 in urban areas in the same year. The number of female stillbirths is also more than the number of males. At least 13,505 female children were born dead of which 2,764 in rural areas and 10,741 in urban areas. A total of 11,055 males were still-born, of which 2,266 cases were reported from rural areas and 8,789 from urban areas, the data revealed. The data also scrutinised the number of still births within the state of Rajasthan. According to the CRS report, in Rajasthan, maximum stillbirth cases were reported in Jaipur with 2,087 followed by 1,528 in Udaipur, 1,450 in Jodhpur, 1,354 in Ajmer, and 1,125 in Barmer. Additionally, the desert state ranked fifth in the list of states with the highest infant mortality rate in the same year. Maharashtra reported the maximum 17,632 infant deaths followed by 12,570 in Gujarat, 11,819 in Odisha, 10,896 in Tamil Nadu, and 10,703 in Rajasthan. However, the number of male infants has been more than the female in Rajasthan. At least 6,482 male infants died in 2022 against 3,707 female infants in the urban areas. Meanwhile, another 286 male died in rural areas against 224 females. Another classification of the data also showed that 10,703 children died when their age was less than a year. At least 1,971 children died when they were 1 to 4 years old and a total of 4,750 children died when they were between the ages of 5 and 14, the report showed. Reacting to the matter, the project director of the child health department, Dr Pradeep Chaudhary, said, "CRS has a different calculation system than the state registration system (SRS) which might be a reason that the stillbirth number is the highest in the country. We should remember that Rajasthan also reported a good amount of birth registration despite the stillbirth number being so high. Our state was fourth in the country in birth registration as per the CRS system."
