Man lynched over cattle smuggling doubt, 5 held
	
		
				Jaipur, Sept. 24 -- At least five men have been arrested for lynching a Madhya Pradesh-based man in Bhilwara over suspicions of smuggling cattle, police said on Tuesday, adding that the men were arrested on Friday.
"The incident took place on September 16 and a case was registered the following day," said Banera station house officer (SHO) Moti Lal, adding that the victim, Sheru Susadiya, originally from Mandasaur in Madhya Pradesh, had gone to Bhilwara's Lambiya fair with his brother to purchase a cow. He added that the complaint was lodged by Sheru's cousin Manzoor Pema.
"When they were returning with the cow in a pick-up van at night, a group of men in a silver camper vehicle began chasing them. At around 3 am, they overtook Susadiya's van and blocked the road, and some more men also arrived on a two-wheeler," read Pema's complaint.
The group then proceed to allegedly assault the two brothers severely,using rods and sticks, said the complaint.
"Sheru and Mohsin tried to convince them that they purchased the cow from the fair when the assailants started blaming them for slaughtering cows," it added.
The complaint also alleged that one of the accused allegedly tried to extort Susadiya's family by demanding Rs.50,000 for Susadiya's release.
The accused also allegedly snatched a sum of Rs.36,000 that Susadiya was carrying on his person, it added.
According to Pema, a police officer from the local station contacted him and informed him that Susadiya was admitted to a local hospital in a critical condition. He succumbed to his injuries on Friday, read the complaint.
The five accused were arrested on the same day and identified as Himanshu Sharma, Dharmaraj Kumawata, Deepak Kumawat, Rahul Lohar, and Durgsh Bairwa, police said, adding that the group consisted of 15 to 20 people at least and the remaining are absconding.
Some of the other people named in the FIR include Deva Gurjar, Kunal Malpura, Pradeep Rajpurohit and Nitesh Saini, according to police officers aware of the matter.
"They were also sent to judicial custody on Saturday. Mohsin's statement will be recorded on Tuesday," said Pemla's counsel advocate Mukesh Banawat. According to police, Mohsin was able to escape and hide himself during the attack and contact the family the following day.
The case was registered under sections 189 (2), 308 (2), 115 (2), 126 (2), 109 (1) of BNS, they added.
Susadiya is survived by his wife and two children, his relatives told reporters.
On Tuesday , a delegation of Bhilwara's Muslim community met former chief minister Ashok Gehlot and the district superintendent of police Dharmendra Singha and submitted a memorandum demanding suitable compensation, arrest and punitive action against the accused.
Gehlot on Tuesday expressed his concerns around the incident.
"A man has been lynched in Bhilwara, I just met his family. This is a serious matter. The law and order situation in the state is at stake," he told reporters in Jaipur.
According to Dharmendra Singha, Bhilwara SP, a post-mortem examination of the deceased was completed and that investigation to work out the precise cause of death was underway.
He added that a special investigation team(SIT0 was formed to conduct the investigation into the incident.
