Man beaten to death in Churu, 11 detained
Jaipur, July 8 -- At least 11 people have been detained on Monday after they allegedly beat a 17-year-old minor to death on Sunday evening when he was returning from a procession that was taken out on the occasion of Muharram in Rajasthan's Churu, police officers aware of the matter said.
Deputy police superintendent of Churu circle Sunil Jhajharia said, "The incident took place at around 4.30pm on Sunday when the victim, Shahrukh, was returning home after attending a Muharram procession. The mob comprising a dozen of young men, including some minors, had a verbal clash with him and they started beating him leading to his death. We have detained 11 people. Further probe is on."
According to police, Shahrukh had accidentally pushed someone when he was passing through the crowded clock tower area in the city. "An argument broke out between Shahrukh and the individual when some of the latter's friends gathered at the spot. As the argument escalated, the group attacked Shahrukh and thrashed him brutally," said Jhajharia.
A video of the incident purported showed the mob dragging Shahrukh from the group and started punching and kicking him repeatedly following which he fainted on the road. "Soon, he fell unconscious, the mob got scared and fled the spot. Meanwhile, some locals rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead," said the DSP.
Based on a complaint of his family, police registered a case under sections 103 (murder) and 189 (unlawful assembly) of BNS against unidentified people at the Kotwali police station.
Meanwhile, the incident also sparked a protest in the area.
Congress vice president Rafeeq Mandeliya also joined the protest. "We are speaking to the administration and demanding justice," he said.
Meanwhile, an additional force from five local police stations has been deployed in the area to maintain the law and order situation....
