Barmer, Oct. 17 -- The outbreak of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) among cattle in Barmer district has led to a sharp decline in milk production, severely affecting both dairy farmers and the local Saras Milk Dairy network. According to officials at Barmer Saras Dairy, milk collection has dropped from 11,000 litres in June to just around 6,500 litres in October, nearly a 50% decline in overall supply. Official said areas such as Sheo and border villages are the worst affected, with milk collection completely halted in several routes due to widespread LSD. Confirming the development, Kapil Swami, managing director of Saras Dairy Barmer, said that milk inflow has decreased significantly due to cattle illness. "All 14 supply routes under our 26 committees are affected, and production units are also facing a shortage of raw milk," he said. Currently, the dairy is able to supply around 5,000 litres of milk daily within the district, alongside 1,527 litres of buttermilk. The remaining milk and milk powder are being sent to the Raniwada Dairy Plant for processing. According to the information, the Barmer Saras Dairy operates through 26 committees and 14 supply routes, with nine collection centres located in Barmer and Balotra. However, nearly all these routes have reported a steep drop in milk arrival. Official said that in the Jeteshwar route, milk collection has fallen from 551 litres in June to only 168 litres this month. Villages like Sata, Rangwali, Dewasiyon ki Dhani, Bhanwaria, Pandarwali, Tarla, Ambawa, Sonarhi, Katerla, and Suhagi have all reported significant production losses. On the Bajrang route, daily milk arrival has reduced from 722 litres to just 370 litres. Similarly, from Khara Gangala and Umarla villages, milk supply has halved-from 600 litres two months ago to 300 litres now. Swarooparam, a milk supplier, said, "Many cows have been infected with Lumpy Skin Disease. Milk production in villages has reduced drastically, and supply has fallen to nearly half." In the Nokhra Mahadev route, supplier Tulsaram Sain said a similar trend. Earlier, 650 litres of milk was collected from villages like Chhotu, Adel, Adel Panji, Gholanada, Khar ki Beri, Mangne ki Beri, and Nokhra, but now the supply is down to 300 litres. Supplier Kailashdan from the Sata route said, "Earlier, we used to get 1,000 litres of milk from villages like Sata, Dhanak, Alamsar, Akoda, Sawalor, Lilsar, Bhukrasar, Samdari Gala, and Ogala, but now it has reduced to 750 litres. Even my own cattle are affected by the disease, and one or two animals in every village are dying due to infection." It mentioned here that The Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) outbreak has severely affected Barmer district, killing hundreds of cattle and infecting many more.
