LoP targets govt over severe water crisis faced by farmers
Jaipur, May 23 -- Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully has strongly criticised the Rajasthan government over the ongoing water crisis affecting farmers in Hanumangarh and Sri Ganganagar. In a scathing tweet, Jully accused the state administration of failing to deliver on its promise to strengthen the Indira Gandhi Canal Project (IGNP) and resolve canal-related issues, leaving farmers helpless during the crucial kharif sowing season.
Calling it a betrayal of the government's word, he urged chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma to act swiftly and ensure water supply to the region's parched fields.
He tweeted, "Farmers in Hanumangarh and Sri Ganganagar are facing a severe shortage of canal water for Kharif sowing. Major irrigation systems in these districts like Gang Canal, IGNP, and Bhakra Canal are not supplying water to the farmers, which is an injustice to the food providers."
"Chief Minister, about one and a half months ago during your visit to Ganganagar-Hanumangarh, you promised the farmers that strengthening work worth Rs 3400 crore would be done for IGNP and the problems of khals and canals would be resolved soon. But today, farmers are struggling for every drop of canal water, and your promises have not moved beyond paper," he added.
"When the head of the state makes a promise to the people, the people do not see it as mere words; they understand it as a commitment of the government. You have broken this promise, broken the trust of the food providers, and shattered their hopes. This is contrary to the dignity of this honorable office. The injustice being done to the farmers is unfortunate," he said.
BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bharadwaj said that water from the Gang Canal and Bhakra Canal has already been released, and only travel time remains. He added that the Indira Gandhi Canal is a matter involving three states and will be resolved soon. "What Congress failed to achieve in the last 70 years, the BJP government has accomplished significantly more," he added....
