Jully urges govt to revive cong's udaan scheme
Jaipur, May 29 -- Leader of Opposition in the Rajasthan assembly Tikaram Jully on Wednesday urged chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma for the immediate revival of the Udaan Scheme, a menstrual hygiene initiative launched by the previous Congress government for the health and safety of crores of women and girls in the state.
In a letter to the CM, Jully emphasised that menstrual hygiene remains a subject shrouded in silence, leading to widespread lack of awareness. Citing NFHS-4 data, he said only 47.9% of women in Rajasthan used sanitary pads as of 2015-16. "It was this gap that led the Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government to launch the Udaan Scheme in 2021 to provide free sanitary pads to girls and women aged 11 to 45."
"During the tenure of the previous government, efforts were made to distribute sanitary napkins to every household through anganwadis, schools, and colleges, and the initiative was largely successful," he said. Jully further said that because of the Udaan Scheme the percentage of women using sanitary napkins rose to 81.9% in NFHS-5, up from earlier figures. "No sanitary napkins have been procured for the past nine months, leaving millions of women and girls in distress. Many are likely suffering in silence due to social taboos around menstruation, making this a serious and sensitive issue," said the LoP.
In response, BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bharadwaj said: "At many workplaces the government has organised awareness workshops. The Congress leaders think women safety and health only when there are not in power."...
