Jaipur, Oct. 29 -- Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully on Tuesday criticised the state government for going back on its pre-poll pledge of annual assistance for school students' uniforms, saying the move betrays promises made to poor families. Ahead of the last assembly elections, the BJP, in its manifesto, had promised an annual direct benefit transfer of Rs.1,200 per student from economically weaker families to buy school bags, books and uniforms. But after coming to power, the state government slashed that amount in half - now offering only Rs.600 per year, which includes both fabric and stitching costs, Jully said. The Congress leader said the government has already failed to provide safe school buildings and adequate teachers, and is now discriminating even in help meant for young students. Recalling the previous Congress scheme, Jully said the former government used to provide two sets of school dress material along with Rs.200 for stitching to ease parents' burden. At the time, the BJP had attacked the Congress plan, questioning how stitching could be done for Rs.200. Jully alleged that the previous Congress government provided uniforms for all children, whereas the BJP government's order restricts the scheme to SC, ST and BPL students only, excluding poor children from EWS and OBC families. "Are there no poor children among general category and other castes, or OBCs? " he asked. The opposition leader also reiterated concerns about school safety and teacher shortages, arguing that trimming funds for uniforms will further undermine the education of poor students....
