Jalore: 52-yr-old farmer dies in lightning strike
Barmer, June 20 -- A 52-year-old farmer was struck and killed by lightning while working in his field during the first spell of monsoon rains in Jalore district of Rajasthan on Wednesday evening, officials aware of the matter said on Thursday.
According to Bhadrajoon Tehsildar Chandan Pawar, the victim, Dalaram Meena, a resident of Nimbla village in Bhadrajoon tehsil, was in his field when heavy rains accompanied by lightning began around 6pm on Wednesday.
Dalaram died on the spot after a bolt of lightning hit him during the 19 mm rainfall recorded in the area, Pawar added. Upon receiving information, his family members rushed to the scene and took the body to the Ahore government hospital in an ambulance but Meena could not be saved as he had already died.
An autopsy was conducted on Thursday morning, after which the body was handed over to the family for last rites, Pawar said.
Authorities also have initiated the necessary reporting process to provide compensation to the victim's family.
Bhupendra Singh from from India Meteorological Department that Jalore experienced varied rainfall with the onset of the monsoon, with Ahore recording the highest at 25 mm. He said the sudden change in weather brought a slight dip in temperature but also highlighted the dangers of unpredictable weather events....
