Jaisalmer: Villagers boycott camps, demand revenue records for Oran and grazing lands
India, Sept. 20 -- The indefinite sit-in launched by environmental activists in Jaisalmer demanding the registration of Oran and Gochar lands in official revenue records continued for the fourth consecutive day on Friday.
On the fourth day of the protest, villagers from many villages extended their support by boycotting government service camps. Residents of more than a dozen villages refused to participate in the Gramin Seva Shivirs (rural service camps) organized in their areas. Villagers said that they will not participate in these camps if their demands of registration of Oran and Gochar lands in official revenue records are not addressed.
Swaroop Singh Bhati, Sarpanch of Gram Panchayat Rupsi, said that they had already informed the authorities about their decision to boycott the camps. "We are demanding registration of Oran and Gochar lands in official revenue records," he said, adding that villagers will not participate in the camps until their demands are met.
Sarpanch of Betina village, Markon Devi, also extended her panchayat's support to the environmentalists. "Our ancestors have protected these lands for centuries, and now authorities are allotting them to private companies, which will not be tolerated," she said.
Jaisalmer Tehsildaar Rajendra Singh confirmed the development. He said, camps have been ongoing in many villages however at some places villagers are not participating in these camps demanding registration of Oran and Gouchar land.
Environmental activist Sumer Singh Sanwta alleged that files prepared over the past two years for registering Oran lands into revenue records have been left to gather dust in the district administration's offices. He accused the administration of handing over thousands of bighas of land to private companies, destroying forests in the process.
According to Sanwta, the administration is deliberately avoiding the inclusion of Orans in revenue records due to pressure from private companies. He stressed that Oran and Gochar lands are not only essential grazing grounds for livestock but also serve as sanctuaries for the environment and wildlife. Without their protection, Jaisalmer's ecological balance could face a severe crisis in the future. He further demanded that Jaisalmer's ponds, aagors (catchment areas), pars (embankments), wells, stepwells, beris, dunes, and sarans be recorded in official land registers.
The boycott of affected rural camps in the villages of Raghwa, Betina, Rupso, Chandhan, Khiya, Hamira, Sankhla, Nehdai, Kohra, Bhadli and Raimala. Villagers in Khiya also protested against the inclusion of their village under the colonization department.
The protestors have put forth a charter of demands including: registration of rivers, streams, catchment zones and khadin fields into records; recognition of historical heritage sites like chhatris, memorial stones (paliyas and devalis), lotias, inscriptions and pathiyals; expansion of village abadi (residential land); allocation of grazing lands in villages lacking them based on livestock ratio; and ensuring revenue pathways for access to villages, hamlets, Orans, Gochars, wells, ponds, temples and cremation grounds....
