Barmer/Jaisalmer, Oct. 11 -- The Jaisalmer district administration has begun the process of recording the district's traditional natural heritage - including Orans, Agors, ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, and catchment areas - in official revenue records. The administration has so far demarcated around 70,000 bighas of land across 47 villages and submitted the proposal to the state government for approval. The move comes amid an ongoing 25-day-long protest in Jaisalmer demanding that Oran lands be formally entered in the revenue records. While authorities and local representatives have welcomed the initiative, members of the Oran Bachao Committee have expressed dissatisfaction, saying, "The protest will continue until these lands are officially registered in the revenue records under the names of Oran and Gochar." SDM Sakam Goyal said joint teams of the district administration, including officials from the Water Resources Department, land records inspectors, and patwaris, have been conducting surveys under the supervision of sub-divisional officers. So far, demarcation has been completed in 47 villages including Sultanpura, Chundi, Amarsagar, Kuldhar, Moolsagar, Badabagh, Ludarva, Hamira, Gorera, Pithla, and Darbari ka Gaon. The compiled report has been forwarded to the government, he added. Jaisalmer MLA Chhotu Singh Bhati welcomed the move, calling it a historic step toward protecting the district's invaluable natural and cultural assets. "Until every Oran is officially recorded in the revenue records, I will continue my efforts with full commitment and determination," he said. "This initiative marks a new chapter in the permanent conservation of Jaisalmer's precious water and land resources. Our Orans, Gochars, rivers, ponds, and Khadins are symbols of our culture and faith, he said." Despite the administration's initiative, members of the Oran Bachao movement expressed dissatisfaction. Environmental activists staging a sit-in outside the collectorate said, "The protest will continue until these lands are officially registered in the revenue records under the names of Oran and Gochar." Meanwhile, district collector Pratap Singh has directed all sub-divisional officers and tehsildars to regularly inspect these traditional water bodies and land areas. He instructed officials to remove any encroachments found and restore the lands to their original condition....
