Jaisalmer records its hottest April day since 1949: IMD data
Jaipur, April 28 -- Jaisalmer district on Monday logged the highest temperature recorded in the month of April in the state since 1949, data from the IMD showed. Officials said that the ongoing heat wave in the state was likely to continue at least till Thursday.
While Jaisalmer recorded the maximum temperature in the state on Monday, Barmer logged the second highest temperature with 46 degrees Celsius.
As per the data collected from the IMD's data service portal, Jaisalmer recorded the similar temperature on April 30 last year followed by 46.3 degrees Celsius on April 29, 2025, and 46.2 degrees Celsius on April 28, 2025 which have so far been the three hottest days in April in the last 77 years.
Heat levels surpassed 45degC in at least seven cities across the state, including Alwar's Vanasthali (45.7degC), Jhunjhunu's Pilani (45 degC), Kota (degC), Chittorgarh (45.4degC), Phalodi (45.4 degC), Bikaner (45degC), Churu (45.3 degC).
Jodhpur city, Sikar's Fatehpur, Sriganganagar, and Jodhpur's Lunkaransar also hit 44 degrees Celsius while Bhilwara, Alwar city, Jipur, and Dausa also had more than 43 degrees Celsius, as per the IMD data.
According to the IMD, the average temperature was 3.2 degrees Celsius more than the normal average on Monday.
The minimum temperature was recorded in Sikar's Fatehpur with 22.3 degrees Celsius followed by Pali's Jawai Dam area and Sikar's Mt Abu with 23.2 degrees Celsius, 25.6 degrees Celsius in Dausa, 25.7 degrees Celsius in Lunkaransar, 25.9 degrees Celsius in Vansthali, 26.1 degrees Celsius at Pali.
The minimum temperature at night was also an average of 6.5 degrees more than the normal average.
However, as the heatwave continued, many places also recorded light rains on Sunday night giving relief from the scorching heat. While Sikar's Fatehpur recorded the highest 4 mm rains, many other places such as Dausa, Karauli, Jhunjhunu, Bikaner also had 1 mm rains. On Monday, IMD also issued an orange alert in Churu, Jhunjhunu, Jaipur city, Jaipur rural, and Bikaner for moderate rains and hailstorm while a yellow alert was also issued in Dausa, Alwar, Tonk, Dholpur, Karauli, Deeg, Sriganganagar, Hanumangarh, and Nagaur for light rains in next 24 hours.
"While there will be no significant change in maximum temperatures in some parts of the state in the coming days, isolated heatwaves are likely in the western and northeastern regions and surrounding areas for the next 1-2 days. During this period, maximum temperatures of 44 to 45 degrees Celsius are likely to be recorded at isolated places in the northwestern parts of the state," said IMD in its official statement on Monday.
It also added: "In the coming days, under the influence of a weak western disturbance, thunderstorms/gusty winds (30-50 KMPH) and light drizzle/light rain are likely over western and northern parts and adjoining areas from April 27 to May 1."
In view of the ongoing heatwave, the IMD also suggested the people to stay in a cool place with proper shadow as much as possible, drink adequate amount of water, carry ORS, and drink home made drinks like lassi, lemon water etc. to stay hydrated. "Farmers are lso advised to take adequate measures to protect animals from heat stress and irrigate their fields regularly in the morning or evening to protect the crops. Necessary steps should be taken to protect animals, birds and other living beings from heat waves."
Meanwhile, in view of the ongoing heatwave, the health dept also issued a detailed guidelines on Sunday to prevent and manage heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses amid extreme summer conditions.
"We have directed the district administrations and public health institutions to ensure preparedness and swift treatment. At district level, the chief medical and health officer was also asked to implement the heatwave action plan under the district collector's supervision, in coordination with other depts and with support from the district disaster management committee. All medical institutions have been instructed to provide shaded waiting areas, safe drinking water and proper ventilation for patients and attendants. Hospitals must ensure functional fans, coolers, air conditioners and other cooling systems," it said in an official release....
