Inclusive technology takes shape at IIT Jodhpur's lab
Barmer, Feb. 6 -- The Interaction and Creative Technology (InterACT) Lab of the School of Design in IIT Jodhpur is engaged in shaping and making technology that includes people, especially those with disabilities.
Here, games, touch-based feedback, and immersive technologies such as Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, and Mixed Reality are being used to transform learning, rehabilitation, and digital interaction to make them more natural and inclusive.
Led by Dr Pranjal Protim Borah, assistant professor at the School of Design, InterACT Lab follows a human-centric design philosophy where technology adapts to people, their abilities, and their everyday realities. "Our goal is to design tools and technology that empower people in their everyday lives," Borah said.
Projects like SPARSH use wearable haptic devices to help people with disabilities and elderly users improve spatial awareness and movement, making rehabilitation more interactive and independent.
"We empathize with our users and other stakeholders to uncover the real challenges they face and identify their root causes and core needs and then we design solutions step by step," explains Borah.
"We aim to create a future where technology interventions and digital experiences are useful, usable, inclusive, and meaningful for everyone."
Accessibility and affordability are central to the lab's work. Under Project Naamya, researchers developed a flexible handheld device that allows visually impaired users to draw geometric shapes simply by bending it, turning abstract learning into a hands-on experience. Another initiative, Project GITA: Gyan In The Air, explores how immersive, game-based learning can create inclusive educational environments for learners with diverse abilities.
The Lab is also working to make digital interaction feel more natural through gestures, voice, and physical movement. Immersive technology is also being used to bring Kathputli, Rajasthan's traditional puppet art, into digital spaces-preserving heritage while connecting it with modern audiences....
