Hundreds of cows dead, several infected by lumpy skin disease
Barmer, Oct. 10 -- The Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) outbreak has once again killed over hundreds of cattle and infected a large number in Barmer district.
Rajasthan witnessed one of the worst outbreaks in 2022, when LSD devastated cattle populations across the state. Over 50,000 cattle deaths were reported between July and September 2022.
Kanwar Singh Mulana of Pathmeda Gaushala said that 94 cattle at the shelter are suffering, and 15 have died during treatment adding that a separate enclosure has been arranged for 20 severely infected cattle.
Advocate Mukesh Jain, secretary of Sumer Gaushala, said there are 18 infected cattle, with one cow and three calves dead.
"The disease has been spreading rapidly for twenty ten days, but officials only distribute tablets and leave," said Mahipaldan Charan of Balera. Chagan Singh said that 100-150 cattle in nearby areas are infected, yet "no government help has arrived."
However, animal husbandry joint director Dr. Narayan Singh Solanki said, "So far, 145 suspected cases have been reported, but no deaths have occurred among these animals. Vaccination is being carried out within a 5 km radius, and approximately 10,000 cattle have already been vaccinated," he said.
Senior veterinary officer Dr Vinay Khatri explained that early symptoms include fever, swelling in the legs and under the neck, skin lumps, excessive salivation, watery eyes and nose, and a decrease in milk production. The disease spreads rapidly through flies and mosquitoes....
