High Court seeks response on PIL for case updates on whatsapp
Jodhpur, Aug. 29 -- The Rajasthan high court issued notices to the registrar general of the high court and the principal secretary of the department of law and legal affairs on a PIL filed by advocate Vivek Firoda, seeking digital reforms to improve access to case information.
The division bench of justices Dr. Pushpendra Singh Bhati and Bipin Gupta heard the matter and directed the respondents to file their reply.
The petition urged the high court to create an official WhatsApp channel for broadcasting case-related information, to introduce a system of providing digitally signed certified copies directly downloadable from the high court website, and to frame rules allowing advocates to access digitized case records. It also suggested that copies of petitions involving government departments should be mandatorily served in advance to the nominated counsel, so that valuable judicial time is not wasted in repeated issuance of notices. Further, the petitioner sought reforms in the preparation of cause lists, particularly in the "orders" category, so that the nature of each application is clearly specified, thereby avoiding unnecessary prolonging of court dockets.
Maintaining that such measures would save countless hours and bring the functioning of the high court in line with the technological practices already adopted by other courts in the country, Firoda stressed that access to justice can no longer remain dependent on outdated procedures.
