High alert sounded in border distts amid tension with Pak
Barmer, May 9 -- A high alert has been declared in Rajasthan's border districts following India's strike on Pakistan, with authorities taking precautionary measures to ensure the safety of citizens. Schools have been closed, and a nightly blackout from midnight to 4 a.m. has been imposed to minimise vulnerability to potential aerial threats. In two bordering districts Barmer and Jodhpur, villagers near the border have been urged to cooperate with evacuation orders if issued, as the state prepares for any escalation in tensions.
District collectors of Barmer and Jodhpur have issued a public advisory urging citizens to stay alert while avoiding panic, emphasising the importance of emergency preparedness and cooperation in the face of potential threats. The advisory outlines several key measures to ensure safety. Citizens have been urged to rely solely on official channels of communication, such as loudspeakers, verified WhatsApp groups, panchayat announcements, and radio broadcasts, while reporting any rumormongers to the police.
Residents are advised to keep essential documents, including identification papers and ration cards, packed in a single, easily accessible bag and familiarise themselves with nearby safe zones or community buildings.
The advisory further advised that in the event of an airstrike or siren, people should take shelter in the innermost, lowest parts of their homes, away from windows, using sturdy furniture for protection and closing all doors and windows while turning off gas cylinders. The advisory further stated that lights should be covered to prevent visibility as night-time blackouts have been enforced, and that unnecessary movement should be avoided.
Villagers in border areas are particularly advised to keep vehicles fuelled and ready for evacuation, ensuring the safety of livestock and prioritising the elderly, children, and disabled persons. Local authorities, including village officials, have been tasked with forming disaster management committees and preparing community shelters. Any suspicious activity, including unidentified individuals, drones, or unusual objects, should be reported immediately to the nearest police station or military post.
Besides, authorities have declared holidays in schools and Anganwadi centres across five border districts - Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Sri Ganganagar, and Bikaner. In Jodhpur, all colleges have also been closed. These closures will remain in effect from May 8 until further notice.
