HC halts scholarships under E3 citing misuse
JODHPUR, May 1 -- The Rajasthan high court on Wednesday stopped the state government from giving scholarships under the E3 category of the Swami Vivekananda Scholarship Scheme, saying public money is being misused to benefit children of wealthy and influential families instead of the poor and deserving students.
The decision came while hearing a plea filed by Manjeet Deora, a 20-year-old student from Sirohi, who went to study at the University of Western Australia. She had been provisionally selected under the E1 category of the scheme meant for families earning less than Rs.8 lakh per year. But later, her selection was withdrawn by the state government citing discrepancies in income details.
The scheme is divided into three categories based on income slabs - E1 for families earning less than Rs.8 lakh per annum, E2 for incomes between Rs.8 to Rs.25 lakh, and E3 for those above Rs.25 lakh.
The court rejected her plea, saying she had no legal right to claim the scholarship as her selection was already cancelled on the same day it was granted.
The court said: "The actual benefit of the scholarship is not extended to the poor and needy, who are actually scholar, academically sound and excellent, but not having any influential position to get the benefit of this scheme."...
