Guv: Marriage of Akbar, Amer princess 'false'
Jaipur, May 30 -- Governor Haribhau Bagade has challenged the historical account of a marriage between Mughal emperor Akbar and the princess of Amer, calling it untrue. He stated that there is no mention of such a union in Akbarnama, Akbar's official autobiography.
"Much of India's early history was written by foreigners and contains several falsehoods. The widely believed account of Mughal emperor Akbar's marriage to the princess of Amer is fictitious,"Bagade said while noting that there is no mention of such an event in Akbar's autobiography.
He was addressing a seminar as the chief guest on Wednesday at the Kumbha Auditorium of the Pratap Gaurav Kendra Rashtriya Teerth, on the eve of the birth anniversary of the valiant warrior Maharana Pratap.
There has been debate on historical mention of the marriage of Amer ruler Bharmal's daughter Jodha to Mughal emperor Akbar in 1569.
Bagde also called the claim that Maharana Pratap ever sent a peace proposal to Akbar as "completely misleading", emphasising that Pratap never compromised his self-respect.
He criticised the historical narrative for disproportionately focusing on Akbar while sidelining figures like Maharana Pratap. However, he acknowledged that the situation is gradually improving, with the new National Education Policy aiming to instil pride in India's culture and glorious history among the younger generation and prepare them to excel in all fields.
In response to the claims, historian and professor RS Khangarot said, "In the Akbarnama, it is mentioned that Akbar married a princess of Amber, but no names are specified. He married Harkha Bai, the eldest daughter of Raja Bharmal of Amber, in February 1562 at Sambhar. Akbar later changed Harkha Bai's name to Mariam, and to this day, a palace named after her stands in Fatehpur Sikri."
"Jodha Bai's original name was Maan Bai. She was the daughter of Raja Udai Singh of Jodhpur and was married to Akbar's son, Jahangir. Since she was from Jodhpur, Maan Bai came to be known as Jodha Bai - this is mentioned in the Jahangirnama," he added....
