Jaipur, Sept. 1 -- An amended draft of the anti-conversion bill with more rigorous punishment up to life imprisonment will be tabled in the upcoming assembly session which is scheduled from Monday, said parliamentary affairs minister Jogaram Patel after a cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma. "Indian Constitution allows everyone to exercise their own religious choice but without hurting anyone else's religious sentiment. Many people follow some fradulent ways such as luring with money, false commitment for martiage etc to convert people. Necessary action will be taken against these culprits under this Rajasthan Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Bill, 2025," Patel said at a press briefing. According to the minister, the amended draft has included a minimum of seven years to maximum 14 years imprisonment along with a Rs.500,000 fine on people who will try to illegally convert anyone from the general category. The punishment may extend to minimum 10 years to maximum 20 years imprisonment along with a Rs.1,000,000 fine if the victims are women, SC or ST, he said, adding that a minimum of 20 years to maximum life imprisonment along with Rs.2,500,000 fine will be imposed in case of mass conversion attempt. "If anyone repeats the same offence, he will be punished with a minimum 20 years to maximum life imprisonment along with a Rs.5,000,000 fine. The registration of his organisation will also be cancelled while conversion premises will be seized by the government," the minister said. However, no offence will be considered if anyone wants to return to his original religion. He further said that the district collector has to be notified two months prior if anyone is willing to be converted. "The collector will probe the matter, and will give an approval accordingly. The conversion should also be notified on a notice board outside the collector's office," Patel said. The state government had tabled the primary bill in the previous assembly session on February 3 but it was not passed. The previous bill stated that "In case of an unlawful conversion, the bill proposes imprisonment of one year extending up to five years and a fine of Rs.15,000". In case of a minor, woman or a person belonging to the SC/ST, the imprisonment ranges from two years to 10 years and the fine is Rs.25,000. In cases of mass conversion, the imprisonment ranges from three to 10 years and the fine is Rs.50,000. In cases of repeat offenders, in each subsequent offence the offender will be liable for punishment not exceeding double the punishment provided under this bill, Patel added....
