Jaipur, May 4 -- The Rajasthan education department on Friday issued directions to 40 schools to change their names that have mention of castes, which are often used as pejorative terms for casteist slurs. The order was issued by the primary school education department director, Sitaram Jatt, on Friday. "As per the proposals sent to the district education officers and the primary school education directorate, the department is hereby approving the proposed new names of 40 primary and upper primary schools across the state which have been running with some uncivilised/ objectionable/ indecent words." Meanwhile, Dalit activists have welcomed the order. "The Supreme Court had long passed an order asking to remove such castiest terms from government establishments. Rajasthan police had also earlier taken this initiative to rename the police stations. This is a welcoming move and it should be done in schools as well," said Tarachand Verma, a Jaipur -based Dalit activist. However, another Dalit Activist Bhanwar Meghwanshi said, "How much will the renaming exercise impact the society? If the government has a plan to sensitise the society about these communities, they should focus on a broader programme. This list of 40 schools also has names of some communities such as Bhil and Falaniya, which are not used as castiest remarks. Generalising their community names in this list as 'objectionable or uncivilised' words may hurt those people."...
