Jaipur, Sept. 28 -- The Centre is mishandling the recent political tension in Ladakh like the violence that erupted due to a clash between two ethnic groups in Manipur, the former chief minister Ashok Gehlot said on Saturday. Commenting on the arrest of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, Gehlot told the reporters on Saturday, "It is not right what is happening in Manipur and now in Ladakh. The home ministry must find out the reason behind this violence. They have suddenly arrested an activist who has been voicing for the territory for a long time. Was he a terrorist that they arrested him in Ladakh and lodged in Jodhpur jail? Can you believe it? The central government is mishandling the Ladakh situation like Manipur only." Police on Friday detained activist Sonam Wangchuk under the draconian National Security Act (NSA) and flew him from Leh to Jodhpur, people aware of the matter said, two days after protests over statehood and land protections roiled Ladakh and left four people dead and 100 injured. The Union government has blamed Wangchuk, a climate activist who won the Magsaysay Award in 2018 and who was among the leading figures of the Ladakh statehood movement, for provoking the clashes on Wednesday. A day later, the Union home ministry cancelled the foreign funding licence of a non-governmental organisation run by Wangchuk. Gehlot said, "Wangchuk had been a renowned climate activist in the region who was also a big supporter of PM Modi. What happened suddenly that they had to arrest him ? Earlier, they were threatening to arrest him and now they have actually done it. They have also slapped NSA." "Had the central government been in talking terms with them, this situation would have never arrived. Do they have any idea about the bloodshed that happened in Manipur in the last two and half years? PM had just visited the state few days back and yet another fresh violence was reported. Now Ladakh is also going in the same line," Gehlot said. He said that peace and brotherhood should be maintained in international bordering states. "This must be the government's priority. What's happening across these states, are not right." Gehlot also demanded the MHA to clarify on the poor security system of the central jails. Referring to the recent recovery of mobile phones and the instance of two prisoners breaking the jail and flee in Jaipur, he said, "It's clear that there is no security system inside these jails. Gangsters have started operating from inside the jails. Mobile phones are being seized from jails daily. MHA must clarify." Reacting to the development, BJP spokesperson, Laxmikant Bharadwaj, said, "Mishandling is how Gehlot ruled Rajasthan during his tenure. Our state was at the top in crime rate. Law and order situation was completely destroyed. The Indian government is doing whatever it takes for the good of the citizen."...
