Govt ignorant about student suicides: Jully
Jaipur, May 25 -- Leader of opposition in Rajasthan assembly Tika Ram Jully accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government of being "ignorant", a day after the Supreme Court pulled up the state police for not lodging a first information report (FIR) after a student died reportedly by suicide in Kota earlier this month.
Jully posted on X, "The increasing number of student suicides in Kota has become a social tragedy. But unfortunately the BJP government is always ignorant and silent about this serious issue."
He added: "The apex court on Friday took a firm stand by thrashing the government in this matter and demanding a response regarding the systematic lapses. The judiciary has to intervene when the government is not sensitive. I have raised this issue in the state assembly, drawing attention to the mental condition of students, control on coaching centres and the need for counselling services, but the government did not take it seriously."
Jully said, "The BJP government of Rajasthan, which has become notorious for disobeying court orders, is expected to wake up this time before filing an FIR and take cognizance of those policy deficiencies due to which the dreams of the country's future are being shattered."
The Supreme Court on Friday pulled up the Kota police for not registering a formal FIR in the suicide case of a National Entrance Eligibility Test (NEET) last month, said officials, while directing the police to take up the matter with top level administrator.
Commenting on the development, deputy chief minister Prem Chand Bairwa, who also holds the portfolio of higher education, said, "We respect the apex court's opinion in the matter. Our government is always serious about the matter. We have set up a committee in the district with the collector and SP to monitor the situation. A bill was also brought in the last assembly session to regulate the coaching centres. It was now sent to the select committee for some necessary modifications. We are hopeful that it will be done by the next session."
He added: "I also request the parents not to put any pressure on students. Curbing suicide cases is only possible with a collective effort by all of us."...
