JODHPUR, May 23 -- The Rajasthan high court on Tuesday directed the state government to submit a fresh affidavit detailing the current status of vacancies in all Nari Niketans (women's shelter homes) across the state and the functioning of a newly created web portal for tracking inmates. The division bench of chief justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and justice Chandra Shekhar Sharma issued the directive while hearing two connected PILs - a suo motu petition and a habeas corpus plea - both concerning the condition and management of women's shelter homes. Observing that both cases raise common concerns regarding the functioning of Nari Niketans, including issues of safety, staff shortage, and infrastructure, the bench decided to hear them together going forward to ensure consistency in directions. Referring to earlier orders, it noted that several directions had already been issued over time, particularly regarding staff appointments and creating a system to allow family members access to basic information about inmates. The state counsel informed the court that a web portal, as previously directed by the court, has now been developed and is functional.
