Jaipur, Sept. 24 -- Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday expressed concern over rising levels of crime and corruption in the state, saying that there was "no government in Rajasthan". Addressing reporters in Jaipur, the senior Congress leader said, "There is no government in Rajasthan. Recently, I visited some districts. Crime is rising everywhere. The people of Bhilwara and Alwar are frustrated by the rampant movement of the sand mafias. No one cares about the issue. No one knows how these mafias are being investigated. No action has been taken against them." "Apart from these mafias, rape cases are also on the rise. I understand that this happens under every government but, it can be curbed if the government wishes to do so. The law and order situation in the state has completely spiralled out of the administration's hands. People's lives are at stake,' he said. Gehlot also attacked the government on alleged development issues. He alleged negligence on the part of chief minister Bhajanlal Sharma to his own constituency, and said that the situation reflected that prevalent in the whole of the state. "The state's situation can be assumed from the condition of roads in the chief minister's own constituency -Sanganer,' he said, adding that the heavy monsoon had left farmers distressed without any clarity on compensation amount to which they were allegedly entitled. Gehlot also slammed the government over alleged attempts to deliberately mislead the people of the state on the features they were entitled to under the Chiranjeevi Health Scheme, which was launched in the state during Gehlot's tenure as chief minister in the Congress-led government in 2021. "It was a flagship scheme that made Rajasthan a model state in the country's health sector. This scheme provides cashless treatment up to Rs.2,500,000. Despite the BJP government changing the name of this scheme, the features are still the same. But, they circulated a wrong message to the public that the scheme only provides cashless insurance up to Rs.500,000, which is the key feature of the central government's Ayushmann Bharat scheme," said Gehlot. "Our scheme was not Ayushmann but an expansion. Due to this messaging, people who need it, are not being able to utilize this scheme in a full-fledged manner," the former chief minister added. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to Banswara on Thursday, Gehlot called upon the Prime Minister to issue a statement in support of the family of tailor Kanhaiyalal, who was murdered by a group of assailants in 2022. The crime allegedly took place over a social media post in which he had expressed support to certain comments on the Prophet Muhammad made by BJP MP Nupur Sharma during a nationally televised debate on a news channel. "Congress government had provided Rs.5,000,000 compensation to Kanhaiya Lal's family and a government job for both of his sons to ensure their secure future. Our government had also arrested the culprits within just four hours of the incident following which the case was transferred to the National Investigation Agency, said Gehlot. "Even after three years, NIA failed to prosecute the accused. It's an open-and-shut case now," the former chief minister told reporters. He said that the bereaved family was distressed due to the delay and therefore he urged the central government to take the matter seriously. "I had tweeted about it during Home Minister Amit Shah's visit as well. But no response came. They made it an issue against Congress during the election. They spread this misinformation across Rajasthan that we gave his family only Rs.500,000 while we give Rs.5,000,000 to the families of any Muslim victim. This was a big reason behind our loss in the assembly poll. Then, why is justice delayed now?" asked Gehlot, adding, "The Prime Minister has visited this state so many times after that incident. But he barely talks about the status of the investigation in this case. Only 15 to 20 out of over 115 witnesses' statements have so far been recorded. I hope the Prime Minister speaks about it this time." Commenting on the development and hitting back at Gehlot's comments, BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bharadwaj said, "We have figures showing how the crime rate is decreasing in Rajasthan under the BJP government. Our government is also focused on the development of the people. Gehlot has made it a habit to make such bizarre comments when he has nothing else to say against our government." The press conference followed a series of district tours by Gehlot, which culminated with a visit to Bhilwara on Monday, during which Gehlot addressed a press conference, wherein he said that the people of the state were already feeling a sense of anti-incubency against the state government.
