Jaipur, June 1 -- Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday slammed the state government for not implementing the Gig Workers Welfare Act, which was passed during his tenure. "During our Congress government, for the first time in the country, the Gig Workers Welfare Act was introduced in Rajasthan, which provided a legal framework for the social security of gig workers. Under this law, there were provisions for insurance, fixed working hours, and protection against arbitrary termination," said Gehlot in a post on X. "The law also included the establishment of a Rs.200 crore Gig Workers Welfare Fund and a Welfare Board. It aimed to curb the unchecked practices of internet-based companies," he further said. "As a society, we must also show empathy toward gig workers who often work 14-18 hours a day. They shared that in many residential societies, gig workers are prohibited from using elevators, which is unfair. These workers, who come to serve the residents, are forced to carry goods up and down stairs-an obvious hardship," the Congress leader said. "Since the change of power in the state, this law has not been implemented, leading to discontent among gig workers. Although the BJP government announced an increase in the fund allocation in the budget, no concrete steps have been taken to implement it," he added.
