Jaipur, June 28 -- Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday responded sharply to the remarks that CM Bhajanlal Sharma made against Congress in connection with the Emergency and said that Congress leaders openly "acknowledged" the "flaws and mistakes" during that period. He added that Bhajanlal Sharma is "new" and says such things as he "doesn't know the full picture". Gehlot on X, said, "The difference is simple - during the Emergency, many were jailed. Later, when Indira Gandhi returned to power, Congress leaders openly acknowledged there were flaws and mistakes, and expressed regret. That chapter is closed. What more do you want? Even we went to jail - perhaps Bhajanlal ji doesn't know that." He added that many Congress workers, including himself, went to jail not during the Emergency but for supporting Indira Gandhi when she was disqualified from Parliament despite winning from Chikmagalur. "Around 2,000 people from Jodhpur alone went to jail during that time. Bhajanlal ji is new - first-time MLA, first-time CM. He doesn't know the full picture, so he says such things. One shouldn't mind it. After all, Bhajanlal ji is also someone who does bhajan (devotional singing)," said Gehlot. CM Bhajanlal Sharma on Thursday slammed the Congress party, saying that the country was forced to endure the Emergency 50 years ago just to protect power and position. Referring to former CM Ashok Gehlot, Sharma questioned how he could now suggest that the BJP should forget the Emergency. "That period cannot be forgotten for generations," Sharma said. Responding to the Congress leader's remarks, BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bharadwaj said, "...Bhajanlal Sharma may be new as CM, but he has long experience in public life and has closely witnessed the misdeeds of the Congress..."...
