Jaipur, Nov. 20 -- Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday invoked former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's legacy while launching a sharp attack on the BJP and the Election Commission, alleging that India's democratic values were being weakened through polarisation, institutional pressure and misuse of power. Addressing reporters at the state Congress office, Gehlot said Indira Gandhi dedicated her life to the poor and earned the trust of the most marginalised communities. "She is no longer with us, but the new generation must understand her commitment. Today those in power have no faith in democracy. They are pushing the country in an uncertain direction through polarisation on caste and religion," he said. A government that wins elections through division, he added, "cannot ensure unity and integrity." Responding to BJP state in-charge Radha Mohan Das Agrawal's remarks that Anta Assembly by-poll result "proved beyond doubt" the BJP ensures fair and transparent elections, Gehlot said such statements reflected arrogance and the confidence of a party "that believes it can win through foul play." He alleged that massive corruption and the rise of "five-star offices" of the BJP and RSS were funded through electoral bonds, which he claimed were tied to selective withdrawal of CBI, ED and Income Tax notices. "This is an open, naked game before the country," he said. Asked about calls within the party to boycott elections held via EVMs, he said such decisions require wider consultation and cannot be taken hastily. Commenting on Gehlot's remarks, BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bharadwaj accused him of "twisting facts" while invoking Indira Gandhi on her birth anniversary. "Gehlot is talking about saving democracy, but it was Indira Gandhi who crushed democracy by imposing Emergency on the country. Gehlot himself was a minister in her government," he said. Bharadwaj said the party's offices were built through the contribution and hard work of its workers, "who consider the organisation their family," and not through any illegitimate means....
