Gehlot slams BJP, NIA over delay in justice in Kanhaiya Lal murder case
Jaipur, June 29 -- Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday slammed the BJP government over the delay to prosecute the perpetrators of Udaipur based tailor Kanhaiya Lal Teli who was murdered on June 28 in 2022.
Taking X, Gehlot said, "It is a failure of the central government and the NIA that was able to record the testimony of only six out of a total 166 witnesses in the case in the last three years. No special fast track court was also set up in such a heinous case. In fact, the case is currently being tried on an additional charge to the CBI court."
Taking a dig at the BJP, he also said, "It is extremely sad that even after 3 years, he and his family are waiting for justice. BJP has made full political use of this issue during the election but didn't put any effort for justice whereas this is a very clear case in which the entire crime and even the confession were already recorded on video."
He further added: "Our government had arrested the accused in just four hours. The NIA took up the case on the same night but justice is still awaited. Had it been our government, had the NIA not taken over the case from the state police, Kanhaiyalal must have got the justice so far."
"The victim's family was provided with Rs 50 lakh in compensation, and both of his sons were given government jobs. However, the BJP spread misinformation among the public, claiming that only Rs 5 lakh was given, thereby politicizing the difference between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 50 lakh. Now a film is being made on this murder. Everyone knows who will benefit politically from this film but justice will have to wait more. " he said.
On June 28, 2022, a tailor named Kanhaiya Lal was beheaded by Riyaz Attari and Ghous Mohammed at his shop for supporting former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nupur Sharma's controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammed.
The accused captured the brutal killing on their mobile phones and also issued a threat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The duo posed with the knives used in the killing. They were arrested hours after the crime that day.
Commenting on it, BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bharadwaj said, "Kanhaiyalal had sought help from the police, citing a threat to his life, but Ashok Gehlot's government denied it. As a result, terrorists beheaded him. It was the local villagers who caught the fleeing attackers and handed them over to the police. Yet, Gehlot's government provided security to the families of these terrorists. Those responsible for Kanhaiyalal's murder have no moral right to speak on this matter."...
