Jaipur, July 18 -- Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday attacked Union home minister Amit Shah over the delay in the Kanhaiya Lal murder trial, questioning why justice has not yet been delivered even three years after the incident. "This was a heart-wrenching incident that shook the entire nation. We arrested the accused within four hours, yet the case was immediately taken over by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) that same night. We raised no objection, trusting that the central agency would investigate thoroughly. But three years have passed, and the NIA has not even recorded witness statements. The special court does not even have a regular judge," Gehlot told reporters. Kanhaiya Lal Sahu, a tailor, was brutally murdered by cleaver wielding two men in Udaipur in June 2022. Gehlot was the chief minister of the state at the time. Gehlot accused the BJP and Shah of politicising the tragedy during the 2023 assembly elections by spreading misinformation about compensation given to the victim's family. "Our government gave Rs.50 lakh in financial aid and jobs to both sons of Kanhaiya Lal - the biggest compensation package post-independence. Still, BJP leaders, including Amit Shah, falsely claimed that Rs.50 lakh was given to a Muslim family and only Rs.5 lakh to Kanhaiya Lal's family. This narrative of Hindu-Muslim divide misled voters and harmed us in the election." He emphasised that the murder of Kanhaiya Lal was not just an individual loss but a tragedy that deeply affected people of all communities across Rajasthan. "Everyone felt the pain of this incident, regardless of religion or caste. And yet, three years later, there's no justice. In many cases, verdicts are delivered in three to six months, including capital punishment. Why not here?" The Congress leader also criticised the BJP leadership for being absent from Udaipur during the crisis. "While we were on the ground - I personally cancelled my tour, the chief secretary and DGP went to Udaipur - BJP leaders were busy with a meeting in Hyderabad. No concern for the state, no leadership shown," he said. Gehlot concluded by urging Shah to provide answers during his visit to Rajasthan. "Welcome to the state, but please tell the people - when will Kanhaiya Lal's family and the people of Rajasthan get justice? This case demands seriousness, not politics." Commenting on it, BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bhardwaj said, "Those who failed to provide security to Kanhaiya Lal, under whose government an innocent man was brutally beheaded, are now making statements. Justice will be delivered under the BJP government. Congress should not politicise this issue."...
