Gehlot praises govt's move to audit schools, dilapidated buildings
Jaipur, July 28 -- A day after chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma formed a state-level committee to monitor the dilapidated buildings across the state to avoid accidents like that of in a government school in Jhalawar claiming the lives of seven minors, former chief minister Ashok Gehlot praised the move saying that the public must be assured that all the officers now act on what CM is saying.
"I have heard that the chief minister will get all government buildings audited, which is a good thing, but the people of the state should have confidence that all officers and employees will act on the chief minister's words and monitor it," Gehlot said on Sunday.
Sharma on Saturday formed a state-level committee led by the secretary of the Public Works Department (PWD) and a district-level committee in each district led by the collector under the state one to conduct a survey of the dilapidated buildings including the schools, and Anganwadi buildings every year and finish their renovation work by June 15 every year before the monsoon starts.
"A report should immediately be submitted by the committee so that we can take further action. The students of the schools that are in dilapidated condition should be accommodated in alternative spaces for their regular classes when the buildings would be renovated. We have also allocated about Rs.250 crores for the new 750 school buildings. This work should be done as soon as possible to avoid any further mishap," the CM said.
At least seven minor students lost their lives and 28 others sustained injuries after a portion of a government upper primary school building collapsed in Piplodi village of Jhalawar district on Friday morning.
On the accident, Gehlot said: "This is a very tragic incident... The question is not about which party's government is in power. If we remain vigilant and monitor continuously, such accidents can be prevented."
He further said if responsible officers and employees pay attention, such incidents can be avoided. "Otherwise, such policies only stay on the papers and are never put on the ground. It is the CM's responsibility to monitor whether they are following his words."
Reacting to the development, BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bhardwaj said: "The former CM must remember that no officer has the authority to disobey a CM's direction. Our CM is thinking positively and taking necessary actions to build a safe environment for the students."...
