Gehlot criticises govt bid to merge 2 civic bodies in 3 districts
Jaipur, Nov. 12 -- Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday criticised the government's decision to merge two municipal corporations each in Jaipur, Jodhpur and Kota.
Taking to X, Gehlot wrote: "Smaller administrative units enable more efficient governance and faster development."
He slammed the government's decision as "short-sighted and politically motivated" and cited growth figures from Chattisgarh, Uttarakhand and Jharkhand- all carved out during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's tenure from largee state, which have shown stronger growth indicators than their parent states, according to Gehlot.
Earlier, the BJP government scrapped nine new districts, and now it has undone the three municipal corporations. Our decision was based on expert advice and aimed at improving urban management. Jaipur's population has crossed 60 lakh, and managing such a large city with a single corporation is extremely difficult. The same applies to Jodhpur and Kota, which are expanding rapidly," Gehlot said.
Reacting to Gehlot's remarks, BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bharadwaj alleged that the Congress government created smaller wards deliberately in Muslim-dominated areas, calling it a conspiracy to weaken democracy. "The BJP government has corrected that wrongdoing. Gehlot has always indulged in such divisive politics, but people now clearly understand his motives," he said....
