Four killed in Jodhpur; rains to continue till June 23: IMD
Jodhpur/ Jaipur, June 22 -- Rajasthan registered widespread and intense rainfall as the southwest monsoon became active across the state, the meteorological department said on Saturday.
According to IMD, Niwai in Tonk recorded the highest rainfall measuring 165 mm in the past 24 hours. Most areas in eastern Rajasthan reported rainfall, with some regions experiencing heavy to very heavy showers. Western Rajasthan also recorded scattered rain, with varying intensity.
Significant rainfall figures included 153 mm in Chaksu (Jaipur), 139 mm in Chauth ka Barwara (Sawai Madhopur), 119 mm in Sikrai (Dausa), 116 mm in Bundi and 115 mm in Kota.
The forecast predicted that rainfall would continue in parts of the state on June 21.
On June 22 and 23, heavy to very heavy rain is likely in regions under Bharatpur, Jaipur and Kota divisions.
Meanwhile, a private car in Jodhpur was swept away by a rainwater stream on Mandalnath Road on Saturday morning, resulting in the deaths of three people, including a couple and a businessman, while one passenger was rescued in time.
According to Karwad Police Station officer Lekhraj Sihag, businessman Hari Bhandari, a resident of Shantinath Nagar near Pratapnagar Royalty Naka, was on his way to Radha Rani Temple near Mandalnath at around 11 a.m. He was accompanied by his son's in-law: Sampat Lahoti, his wife Urmila Lahoti, and Suraj, wife of N.D. Mandhana.
Hari Bhandari was driving the car, with Sampat seated beside him and the two women in the back seat.
Due to heavy rainfall in the morning, water had accumulated on the roads, and there was a strong flow of water across a stretch of kutcha road. Despite the visible current, Bhandari attempted to drive the car through it. The car lost balance, overturned, and began to drift with the water.
All passengers tried to escape by opening the car doors. Locals nearby managed to pull Suraj out safely and attempted to rescue Sampat Lahoti as well.
However, his hand slipped, and he was swept away by the current.
Hari Bhandari and Urmila Lahoti also got trapped and were carried away with the vehicle. The police were immediately informed, and locals assisted in the rescue.
After considerable effort, the car and two bodies - Bhandari and Urmila, a resident of Surat, Gujarat - were recovered and sent to the mortuary.
Meanwhile, divers were deployed to trace Sampat Lahoti. After nearly five hours of search, his body was also recovered....
