Four killed as fire erupts insidescrapyard: Cops
Alwar, April 26 -- Four people, including two children, died and a woman was injured after a massive fire broke out on Friday evening in a scrap warehouse at a residential area in Alwar district's Neemrana, police officers familiar with the matter said.
The victims were identified as Ravi Dutt from Haryana, Dashrath from Neemrana, and the children, Arushi(6) and Kavita (16) from Uttar Pradesh. Their bodies were all sent for post-mortem examination, added police.
According to deputy superintendent of police Charul Gupta, the fire broke out after two scrap collectors tried to light a match to smoke while labourers were breaking discarded perfume bottles nearby.
"The scrap collectors threw their matches towards the yard, which immediately caught fire. Both men fled the spot," she said, adding that a woman at the site had reportedly warned them against lighting a match.
The DSP added that the flames spread rapidly and the whole warehouse was engulfed in minutes.
Towering flames and thick plumes of black smoke were visible from several kilometres away, she added.
"Around half a dozen fire tenders were pressed into service, and firefighters had to struggle hard to bring the blaze under control. The presence of highly inflammable materials in the scrap yard intensified their challenge," she said.
Police evacuated nearby areas, shifted residents to safer locations and enacted crowd control measures in the scrapyard's immediate vicinity, added the DSP.
"A pickup vehicle parked inside the warehouse was completely gutted in the fire. Scrap and other materials worth several lakh rupees were reduced to ashes," added Gupta.
"It was sheer negligence that caused the accident," she said, adding that police were on the lookout for the two scrap collectors who visited the spot. The warehouse owner has also been summoned for questioning.

Meanwhile, former chief minister Ashok Gehlot offered his condolences and raised concerns about the guidelines in place to maintain such facilities.
"This incident is really disheartening. Such incidents may rise due to the heatwave. The government must ensure protective measures for industrial units and issue guidelines for the maintenance of warehouses and transport manufacturing units," he said....
