Former royal family objects to Jaisalmer's depiction in textbook
Barmer/Jaisalmer, Aug. 6 -- A controversy has erupted after the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) included a map in its Class 8 Social Science textbook depicting Jaisalmer as part of the Maratha Empire. The former royal family of Jaisalmer has strongly objected to this representation, terming it historically inaccurate and offensive.
Chaitanyaraj Singh, a member of Jaisalmer's former royal family, expressed strong displeasure, stating that the map wrongly portrays Jaisalmer as part of the Maratha Empire. He has demanded an immediate correction from the Centre .
Singh took to social media platform 'X' to register his protest, tagging the Education Minister and calling for swift action to amend what he described as an "erroneous, malicious, and agenda-driven depiction" in NCERT's Class 8 Social Science textbook (Unit 3, Page 71).
Calling the portrayal "historically misleading, factually incorrect, and deeply objectionable," Singh said that such unverified and baseless information not only undermines NCERT's credibility but also tarnishes the glorious history and sacrifices of their ancestors. Singh further said, "No authentic historical sources mention Maratha dominance, invasion, taxation, or control over Jaisalmer. In fact, official state records clearly state that the Marathas never had any interference in the Jaisalmer princely state."
Urging the Education Minister to take immediate corrective action, Singh wrote, "This is not just a factual correction but a matter of historical dignity, self-respect, and the integrity of the national curriculum."
Earlier, Brigadier (Retd.) Bhupesh Singh, a member of the former royal family of Bundi, had also raised objections. On July 28, he posted on social media, "We were never under the Marathas. Do not hurt our pride with fabricated stories."
The disputed map illustrates the Maratha Empire extending from Kolhapur to Peshawar in the north and Cuttack in the east, also depicting Jaisalmer as part of the empire. This claim has sparked strong opposition from historians and royal families, who argue that Jaisalmer was never under Maratha rule.
Renowned historian Tanerao Singh Sodha stated, "Even the Mughals failed to conquer Jaisalmer. The state was founded around 1178 AD by Rawal Jaisal, a descendant of the Yadava clan. His descendants ruled continuously for nearly 770 years, preserving their sovereignty through different periods of Indian history."...
