Bikaner, Jan. 22 -- A fire broke out in the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) of the children's ward of Churu's Bharatiya Government Hospital early on Wednesday, police said.
Station house officer of Kotwali police station, Sukhram Chotia, said, "Doctors and nursing staff on duty immediately began evacuating the 15 infants from the ward, safely moving them to a nearby ward before the fire could spread further. Hospital staff later used fire extinguishers to control the flames.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 7.15 am in the maternal and child health unit of the hospital. At the time, 15 children were admitted to the ward. "The fire started when a child's mother plugged in a nebuliser machine, leading to a short circuit in the electrical switchboard. The short circuit caused the switchboard to catch fire, and thick smoke soon spread throughout the ward," said Chotia, adding that all children in the ward, their attendants, including medical staff, are safe, and the ward suffered only minor damage....
