Barmer/Jaisalmer, Nov. 1 -- A major fire broke out at a luxury tent resort in Jaisalmer's Sam Sand Dunes area on Thursday night, causing panic among tourists attending a nearby music program, officials said on Friday, adding that no casualties were reported. According to police, the incident occurred around 9 pm at Jain Resort, where a cultural event was underway about 50 metres from the tent complex. As the flames spread rapidly, tourists fled the venue in panic. Within minutes, five luxury tents were completely gutted. Resort staff and tourists managed to douse the flames by throwing sand, as no fire tenders or civil defence teams reached the spot in time, said SHO Bagdu Ram. Eyewitnesses said the blaze was so intense that flames were visible from nearly a kilometre away. Confirming the development, SHO Bagdu Ram said, "A music and cultural program was being held inside the resort premises when flames suddenly erupted in one of the tents. Fuelled by strong desert winds, the fire quickly spread to adjacent tents. It took nearly 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control." It is further informed that the tents that caught fire were part of a premium luxury package, containing expensive furnishings and electrical fittings worth several lakhs of rupees. Several tourists also lost personal belongings in the fire. Soon after the incident, tourists from Maharashtra staying at the resort were shifted to other tents after the fire was extinguished, police said. Locals, however, criticized the district administration and municipal authorities for negligence, claiming that the fire brigade was absent despite the area's known vulnerability to such incidents in the past. SHO Bagdu Ram admitted that although a fire tender is usually stationed near Sam dunes during the tourist season, it was not present at the time of the incident. Police confirmed that there was no loss of life, and the cause of the fire is being investigated....
