Bharatpur, Sept. 9 -- Thousands of farmers on Monday began a sit-in protest at the Jhalawar district collector's office, pushing for their long-pending demands. Farmers from nearly 1,465 villages have been reaching the protest site on tractor-trolleys for an indefinite agitation, people aware of the matter said. They have decided to launch a fresh stir against the government over six key demands. Their demands include: provision of Minimum Support Price (MSP), no privatisation of the power department and withdrawal of smart meters, a special Assembly session to discuss farmers' issues, dialogue between farmers and all MLAs, annual discussions with the agriculture minister, and adequate compensation for crop losses. Farmers said heavy rains have damaged kharif crops, leading to losses. They alleged that benefits of government schemes are not reaching them and demanded active involvement of administration officials.
