Families of victims demand Rs.50L compensation, claim negligence
Jaipur, Oct. 7 -- Twenty five-year-old Joginder Singh sat in a corner of an ICU on the second floor of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital's trauma centre on Sunday night as he waited eagerly for the morning.
His mother, Rukmani Kaur (50), was supposed to be discharged after a five-day-long treatment following an accident.
In a matter of minutes, however, everything changed.
The fire broke out in a store room of the ICU at the largest government hospital in the state.
A total of 11 patients were admitted to the ICU. While five people were rescued, six were killed in the blaze, Rukmani being one of them.
Others who were killed include Pintu Gurjar (25), Dileep (40), Shrinath Singh (59), Khushma Devi (42), and Bahadur Dhanka (28).
Families of the victims have accused the hospital staff of gross negligence.
Joginder alleged that the hospital staff ignored early warnings regarding the blaze and fled as the fire spread.
"I, and a few other people, saw sparks from the store-room around 11.20pm. We told the staff working in the ICU, but nobody paid heed to us. When the smoke started coming out ten minutes later, everybody panicked," Joginder said.
"When two of the nursing staff opened the store room, a massive fireball burst into the ICU. All the nursing staff, ward boys, and the guards immediately fled the spot. We screamed and urged them to rescue the patients, but nobody was there," he recalled.
"Nobody came for our help. We lost everything," he said.
Joginder and his brother Sheru sell fruits to earn a living.
Their father, Bacchu Singh (52), is a specially-abled person, Joginder said, adding that his mother handled the household and did labour work occasionally to run the house.
"We started moving the beds of our patients. But there was chaos at the gate. Not everybody was lucky to get their patients out," said Om Prakash Gurjar, cousin of Pintu killed in the incident.
Some nursing staff and people from a nearby medical shop, victims' family members said, returned to the spot along with police personnel a little later, but by then six patients had died.
"He (Pintu) got stuck as the toxic fumes made it impossible for the staff to go inside the ICU further. He died helplessly," Om Prakash said as he struggled to stop his tears.
"He was stable these days. Two hours after the fire, when we went to the ICU to get him out, he was no more," said Om Prakash.
"He was the sole earning member of the family. He has a younger brother and elderly parents. Where would they go now?" Om Prakash told reporters.
Narendra Kumar fainted inside the trauma room when he went to check on his ailing mother, Khushma Devi (42), who was trapped in the ICU and died in the incident.
Family members of the victims staged a sit-in demonstration at the SMS Hospital amid a heavy downpour in the capital on Monday.
"We demand compensation of Rs.50 lakh and a government job. The government must pay for our loss," said Joginder's brother, Sheru....
