Ex-CM attacks govt over firing near Jodhpur coaching centre
Barmer, Aug. 15 -- Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot condemned the firing incident near a coaching centre in Jodhpur's Manji Ka Hatha as a student was hit by a pellet in her elbow. He said it is "deeply concerning, reprehensible, and intolerable," adding that it is a stark reflection of the state's law and order situation.
Ahead of the state-level Independence Day celebrations, a gunshot was fired outside a shop near a coaching centre in Jodhpur's Manji Ka Hatha area on Wednesday evening. The bullet first struck the bonnet of a retired soldier's car and then ricocheted, hitting a female student in the elbow, police said.
According to Mahamandir police, the incident took place when Reena, a student from Ramdawas village, was having tea with her friend at a roadside tea stall near the coaching centre. Retired soldier Hemsingh was also sitting nearby, with his car parked outside the shop. Suddenly, the sound of a gunshot rang out. The bullet hit the car's bonnet, bounced off, and struck Reena's elbow, causing her to bleed. Her friend immediately informed her father and Reena's brother, while Hemsingh alerted the police. Police said that it is still unclear who the intended target was or the motive behind the firing.
SHO Devendra Singh Dewra and other officials reached the scene. The forensic science laboratory collected evidence from the spot. The injured student was first taken to a private hospital in Paota and later referred to Mathuradas Mathur Hospital. Her condition is reported to be out of danger.
Devendra Singh Dewra said that, at first, it appeared the young woman may have been injured by a stone kicked up from a vehicle's tyre. However, when an X-Ray at the hospital confirmed she had been struck by a bullet in the elbow, police immediately swung into action and reached the spot. An FSL team was called to collect evidence, while police teams began reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify the suspects.
Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot also condemned the incident. He wrote on social media on Wednesday night, "It is extremely worrying, condemnable, and intolerable that a girl preparing for a recruitment exam was shot at in broad daylight outside a coaching institute in Manji Ka Hatha area near Paota, Jodhpur, in an attempt on her life. This incident took place at a time when the chief minister and the government machinery are preparing for the Independence Day celebrations in Jodhpur, thereby presenting the true picture of the state's law and order situation. I have spoken to the Jodhpur Commissioner over the phone regarding this matter, and he has assured that the culprits will be arrested soon."...
