Jaisalmer, Dec. 27 -- Large flocks of migratory vultures from southern Europe and Central Asia have arrived in Jaisalmer's Degrai Oran, turning the traditional grazing land into a seasonal refuge for rare species like the Cinereous Vulture and the Eurasian Griffon Vulture. Hundreds of these vultures are currently present in the Degrai Oran area. The birds mainly migrate from Spain, southern Europe, Tibet, Mongolia and Kazakhstan. As temperatures in these regions plunge several degrees below zero and heavy snowfall makes food scarce, the vultures head south for more favourable conditions. Degrai Oran has emerged as a preferred destination for these migratory birds due to its relatively untouched ecosystem. The area supports thousands of livestock, and carcasses of animals that die naturally provide abundant food for the vultures. In addition, khejri and kumath trees offer safe and suitable resting and roosting sites. Local environmentalist Sumer Singh Sanwata said the sighting of the Cinereous Vulture and the Eurasian Griffon Vulture this season is a major achievement and highlights the ecological significance of the region....
