Barmer, Sept. 14 -- A formal probe was initiated on Saturday into the alleged mistreatment of a head constable by a senior police officer in Barmer district on Thursday, police said. According to Nagaur MP Hanuman Beniwal, Chohatan deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Jeevanlal Khatri was accused of slapping his driver, head constable Ramuram Meghwal. An audio clip in which the constable is heard purportedly narrating his ordeal surfaced on Friday, which included references to an alleged attempt at a cover-up by senior officers. The audio clip has been independently verified by HT. According to Meghwal, the incident occurred when DSP Khatri, accompanied by reader Gopikishan Kataria, had gone to Dhanau for an inquiry. While returning around 9:30 pm, the DSP allegedly hurled abuses at his driver, stopped the vehicle, and slapped him. In the audio, the driver can be heard purportedly claiming that although superintendent of police Narendra Singh Meena was informed, senior officers tried to suppress the matter. He also purportedly claimed that ASP Jassaram Bose made him sign a compromise. In the clip, he also purportedly added that he could no longer work in such an environment without support from his seniors. Apart from the Nagaur MP, Barmer MP and senior Congress leader Ummedaram Beniwal and Baytu MLA Harish Chaudhary also condemned the alleged incident, which was denied by the DSP, who alleged that the head constable was driving carelessly. "I asked for another vehicle and the matter was resolved in the presence of senior officers. Now, under others' influence, he is fabricating charges. Nothing of this sort happened," said Khatri. While no formal case has been registered so far, pressure is mounting on the government to order a fair and independent inquiry. The superintendent said a probe has been ordered and added that additional superintendent of police Jassaram Bose was investigating the incident....
