Jaipur, Oct. 29 -- Controversy broke out in the state following the announcement of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, with state Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra accusing the BJP government of deliberately trying to postpone panchayat and municipal elections. Dotasra alleged that the state government misled the Election Commission of India by writing a letter stating that there were no pending local body elections in Rajasthan, and therefore, SIR could be implemented. He said that the Election Commission had asked all states whether their panchayat and municipal elections were pending, and Rajasthan denied it, despite the fact that the tenure of elected representatives in 11,390 gram panchayats, 22 district councils, and 305 municipal bodies has already ended. Dotasra said administrators have been appointed in all these bodies after their terms expired. He pointed out that the Urban Development and Housing Minister himself had stated several times that the government was ready to conduct local body elections and would announce them this year. "If assembly elections are still three years away, what was the hurry to conduct SIR now? The intention is clear - the government wants to delay local body elections under the pretext of SIR," he said. He described the move as a well-planned conspiracy to manipulate the voter list before elections. Dotasra alleged that the SIR process was being used to delete the names of Congress-linked voters, especially those belonging to minority, Scheduled Caste, and backward communities, to avoid defeat in upcoming polls. He said that after using excuses such as One Nation One Election, delimitation, and the OBC Commission's report, the government was now hiding behind SIR to delay the elections. Calling the decision an attack on democratic rights, Dotasra said the SIR process, carried out in the name of voter list revision, is a ploy to remove the votes of the poor and marginalized. The voter lists will remain frozen until February 7 next year when the final publication will take place, meaning elections will be pushed to May or June, after the state budget session. Dotasra accused the BJP of trying to suppress citizens' right to vote through misuse of the "double-engine" government and the Election Commission....
