Doctors boycott work after 2 deaths in a week
Jaipur/Jodhpur/Udaipur, June 21 -- Over 1,500 of resident doctors across Udaipur and Jodhpur began protest over the deaths of two resident doctors in these two cities in a week and said they will boycott all non-emergency work for an indefinite period.
In Jodhpur, at least 550 resident doctors said they will boycott their work demanding action against the seniors responsible for the alleged June 13 suicide of a 30-year-old resident doctor. The protesting doctors included resident doctors from Jodhpur, and Kota Medical College and Hospital. The protest was staged at the SN Medical College in Jodhpur. The Jodhpur Resident Doctors' Association, however, said that Emergency, ICU, and labour room services, will remain unaffected.
Association president Dr Heeralal Yadav said that for the last two days, resident doctors only boycotted work for two hours, between 8 and 10 am. "But with no response or action from the medical college administration, we have started an indefinite strike from 8pm on Thursday," he said.
Dr Ganpat Chaudhary, deputy superintendent of Mathuradas Mathur Hospital, said efforts were being made to maintain the functioning of the hospital despite the strike. "All senior doctors are fulfilling their responsibilities," he said.
The protest came after a resident the doctor accused Dr Raj Kumar Rathore, who is the head of the Pharmacology department of the SN Medical College, of harassment related to his thesis work in a video recorded before he died by suicide on June 13.
Following his death, his family staged a dharna on June 14 at the SMS Hospital demanding immediate arrest of Rathore.
Nagaur MP and Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) chief Hanuman Beniwal also staged a protest in front of Jaipur's Sawai Man Singh Hospital's mortuary over the death of the doctor in Jodhpur. Following this, the police issued a notice to him and another party leader, and Congress MLA Abhimanyu Poonia along with two of his party colleagues for blocking the hospital gates.
"The insensitivity of the administration in Jodhpur has come to the fore in the case... he was pleading to save himself till the last minute. Our main demand is that HOD Rajkumar Rathore should be suspended and arrested. An impartial investigation committee should be formed. The investigation report of this case should be submitted to the government as soon as possible," Beniwal said.
Meanwhile, the situation at Udaipur's Ravindra Nath Tagore (RNT) Medical College remained tense on Friday after over 1,250 resident doctors called a strike for indefinite period after the death of Dr Ravi Sharma on Thursday due to electrocution at the college hostel.
Dr Deependra Sewda, president of the Resident Doctors' Association Udaipur, said: "Doctor Ravi's tragic death has deeply shaken the entire medical fraternity. As of Friday, more than 1,250 resident doctors are on strike. Today, MLA Tarachand Jain also visited us at the hospital premises, where we placed our demands before him. We have submitted a memorandum of our demands to agriculture minister Kirori Lal Meena."
"The protest will continue until our demands are met - including the resignation of responsible officials, an impartial investigation into the incident, adequate compensation for Dr Ravi's family, and other related issues," he added. They alleged that complaints regarding the faulty water cooler were submitted earlier, but no action was taken by the authorities....
