Do not lend phone to strangers, warn police
Jaipur, April 4 -- The cyber crime wing has cautioned that cyber criminals are adopting new methods to target unsuspecting people.
DIG Cyber Crime Shantanu Kumar Singh said that fraudsters often approach people at public places like bus stands, railway stations, parks and tourist spots, asking for a mobile phone on the pretext of making an urgent call. Within seconds of getting access to the phone, they can execute a scam that may even empty bank accounts without victim's knowledge, he said.
The most dangerous method is the "call forwarding scam," where criminals dial a code on the victim's phone to redirect OTPs to their own number. This allows them to gain access to bank accounts, WhatsApp and social media platforms.
In some cases, fraudsters also install spyware or keyloggers on the phone, enabling them to track all activities. They may also misuse contact lists to cheat relatives by creating a fake emergency and demanding money.
Police warned that if a criminal uses your phone for any illegal activity, your number could come under investigation.
Police have advised citizens to keep the device in their own hands, dial the number themselves and use speaker mode....
