BARMER/JAISALMER, July 30 -- Following the tragic death of a student in a school accident in Jaisalmer's Poonam Nagar on Monday, authorities have declared a three-day holiday in all government and private schools as well as Anganwadi centres across the district. Meanwhile, villagers, enraged over the suspension of acting principal Suman Bala, locked two government schools in protest, demanding that her suspension be revoked and the real culprits punished. The villagers also demanded Rs.10 lakh in compensation for the family of the deceased student, Arbaaz, and a contractual job for one of his family members. They warned that the school lockdown would continue until all their demands were met. It mentioned here that following the incident, the education department suspended Village Development Officer Ramchandra for being absent at the site and acting principal Suman Bala for allegedly ignoring the damaged school gate. An investigation revealed that a hazardous pillar had been left standing even after debris was cleared, and students continued to use the unsafe entrance despite the availability of an alternate gate. Meanwhile, District Collector Pratap Singh Nathawat confirmed that the holiday, effective from July 29 to 31, will allow officials to conduct thorough inspections of all school and Anganwadi buildings.
