Barmer/Jaisalmer, Oct. 2 -- Despite the official withdrawal of the monsoon, Jaisalmer district experienced unseasonal rain and hailstorms on Tuesday, caused by an active western disturbance, according to weather experts. The sudden downpour and accompanying hail have caused extensive damage to harvested crops across many villages in the district. The Rajasthan government has asked farmers to report such losses within 72 hours to claim compensation under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, officials said. Farmers can register their claims through the Krishi Rakshak portal or by dialling helpline number 14447. They may also inform local agriculture offices, insurance companies working in their districts, or their respective banks by filling out a loss report, officials said. The sudden downpour affected Jaisalmer city and several rural areas, with rainfall ranging from light to heavy, and hail reported in several locations. Areas including Chandhan, Phalsund, Lathi, Dabla, and the canal-irrigated regions of Nachna and Mohangarh witnessed rain. The Nachna area, in particular, saw rainfall accompanied by hailstones. This untimely rain has dashed the hopes of farmers, leading to the destruction of harvested crops lying in the fields and on threshing floors. Farmer Prem Choudhary confirmed that the Tuesday rain has significantly damaged the cut crops, with moong (mung bean) being the most affected. Crops stored in fields in areas like Bhooh, Dabla, Keshav Nagar, Pithorai, and Nachna have suffered extensive losses. Farmers have demanded an urgent survey to compensate for their damages. Nachna Tehsildar Ratan Bhawani told HT that unseasonal rain has been reported from many villages in the area. According to Bhawani, there are reports that at some places sudden downpour has caused loss to the crops. "We are gathering the information and would assess the situation accordingly," said Bhawani.
