Jaipur, May 20 -- A Congress delegate on Monday submitted a memorandum to governor Haribhau Bagade, in connection with three-year imprisonment awarded to BJP MLA from Anta Kanwar Lal Meena for threatening a government servant at gunpoint, urging him to not reduce his sentence. The delegate said the request was made after learning that Meena had appealed for a relaxation of his punishment. "Rajasthan high court sentenced Meena on May 1. He applied for a special leave petition in the Supreme Court which was also rejected on May 7. The SC also had ordered him to surrender by May 14. But, we have learnt that he appealed to the governor to relax his punishment by using a special political influence under paragraph 161 of the Constitution. We request you to ensure that such a criminal like Meena doesn't get any relaxation by misusing this special power," the memorandum submitted by Congress read. It further read: "He was earlier convicted in 2 criminal cases, while trial is on for another four and he was declared innocent in 17 cases. Relaxing his punishment under paragraph 161 of the constitution may encourage other criminals sitting in political power." A trial court in Jhalawar on May 8 issued an arrest warrant against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA for threatening a government servant at gunpoint, said officials. Nandkishor Verma, the station house officer of Manoharpur police station where the case was lodged against Meena, said, "The warrant was issued by the additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM) trial court in Jhalawar on Saturday after the Supreme Court upheld the high court's order last week that granted Meena a three year jail sentence for threatening a government servant at gunpoint." He added: "The MLA was directed to surrender before the Manoharpur police station or the Judicial Magistrate of Jhalawar by May 14. Otherwise, the police will arrest him formally." The Rajasthan high court on May 2 upheld a lower court order sentencing the MLA to three years imprisonment in a 20-year-old case pertaining to threatening a government officer....
